The role can be located in Cambridge, Bishop’s Stortford or Chelmsford and may be attractive to a candidate looking to relocate from London.

Role and Job Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to provide corporate and governance advice to a range of sports clients, including International Federations, National Governing Bodies and professional clubs and teams across a range of sports. The candidate will also be required to support the team with business development activity as it continues to grow its sports law practice.

The position sits within the Corporate Department at Tees, and the candidate will also be required to lead on general corporate work, primarily for SMEs, start-ups and spin out companies, and family-owned businesses.

Key responsibilities of this role will include:

  • drafting a range of sports rules and regulations and other codes, policies and procedures;
  • advising clients in varied aspects of corporate and partnership law including business and share acquisitions and disposals, shareholder agreements and joint ventures;
  • working and supporting the Wealth Management business in their work for sports individuals and financial investors in sport;
  • negotiating transaction documents whilst applying specialised knowledge and judgement; and
  • identifying opportunities to add value to clients, offering cross referrals and other services.

The role will require the management of a complex mixed caseload of client matters, providing high quality, pro-active legal advice which meets client needs.

This role will also have line management responsibility for one lawyer together with monitoring and supporting junior members of the team, delegating work as appropriate to maximise overall contribution and performance.

Core Requirements

  • strong drafting skills and first-rate attention to detail;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • good interpersonal skills and professionalism; and
  • an ability to work in sometimes difficult and pressured conditions, and to prioritise tasks appropriately and adapt to situational demands.

As a guide, this role would be most suitable for a qualified lawyer with around four to eight years’ post qualification experience, whether gained in a law firm and/or in-house.
