Job Title: Commercial Counsel     

Department: Legal Services, Integrity & Development

Reporting To: Senior Commercial Counsel

Location: Roehampton, South West London (with some travel possible)

International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the world governing body of tennis

The ITF is responsible for the worldwide development of tennis through its highly-regarded Development Programme, its Science and Technical department which monitors equipment and technology, and its Officiating department which oversees the education and advancement of officials. The ITF organises over 1,500 weeks of men’s, women’s and junior tournaments on the ITF World Tennis Tour, and also manages the ITF junior team competitions, ITF Beach Tennis Tour, UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and the ITF Seniors Circuit. The ITF is the owner and rightsholder of the two largest annual international team competitions in tennis, Davis Cup by Rakuten and Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas, and manages the Olympic Tennis Event on behalf of the IOC. The ITF upholds the highest standards of integrity and manages the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme on behalf of the sport and is a partner in the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Overview of Department:

The Legal Department was established in 2017, and now has four full-time lawyers that advise the ITF on a range of legal issues including sporting regulation and disciplinary matters (including safeguarding), corporate governance and ethics, licensing of commercial rights, data protection and other general legal matters. The department endeavours to provide pragmatic and commercial advice, as well as educate colleagues and improve working practices more generally. The team works closely to apply the right mix of expertise to each issue, as well as ensure back-up cover. External counsel is used where appropriate.

The Role:

We are looking for a Commercial Counsel with commercial contract experience to provide in-house legal support to the ITF.  Primarily this role will support the ITF’s commercial functions, under the supervision of the Senior Commercial Counsel. The breadth of the ITF’s commercial portfolio requires the Commercial Lawyer to advise on broadcasting, sponsorship, event hosting agreements, and trademark and other intellectual property issues.  As we are a small team, the role will also support the disciplinary procedures, governance issues and data protection.


  • Commercial – advise on contractual matters pursuant to the ITF’s Contracts Approval Policy, including reviewing, drafting, and negotiating, under the supervision of the Senior Commercial Counsel; advise the ITF Commercial Department on the ITF’s rights (including sponsorship, broadcast and data rights)
  • Disciplinary and dispute resolution – manage the administration of cases and appeals being heard through the ITF’s Internal Adjudication Panel, and ad hoc support in relation to other disciplinary matters
  • Governance – assist with ITF governance matters as required
  • Data Protection – advise on data protection commercial terms, support on Data Subject Rights requests, and other data protection support as required.

You will have…

  • Legal practitioner qualification with 1-3 years PQE
  • Demonstrable and related experience, particularly commercial contract, and licensing rights (advantageous)
  • Pre- or post-qualification experience in sports law (preferred)
  • First rate technical legal skills, especially in drafting and interpretation of documents
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively manage a significant workload
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with stakeholder and relationship management experience
  • Ability to apply expertise to both legal and non-legal challenges
  • Ability to contribute to the strategic and operational aspects of the ITF’s activities
  • A foreign language would be advantageous, ideally Spanish or French, in addition to English (fluent written and spoken)
  • An interest in, or knowledge of, tennis
  • Experience of working for or advising international sports federations, national governing bodies or other relevant organizations would be an advantage
  • The ability to use own initiative and be a team player
