Professional boxer banned for four months

Press Release

4th September 2018

By a decision of the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP), professional boxer Joe Mullender has been issued with a four-month suspension from all sport following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

A urine sample taken from Mr Mullender tested positive for the presence of the prohibited substance 1,3-dimethylbutylamine (DMBA), following an In-Competition test on 9 December 2017, after an International Boxing Federation (IBF) European Middleweight title fight against Lee Churcher in London.

On 12 January 2018, Mr Mullender was charged with an ADRV pursuant to Article 2.1 of the Anti-Doping Rules – “Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an Athlete’s Sample”.

UK Anti-Doping’s (UKAD’s) Director of Operations, Pat Myhill, said: “UKAD always advises taking a food-first approach to nutrition.

“If an athlete feels additional nutritional supplements may be required, UKAD advises them to assess the need, assess the risk, and assess the consequences before doing so.

“Athletes should check all supplements have been batch-tested via the Informed Sport website prior to consumption, as there is always a risk of contamination by a prohibited substance.

The four-month period of ineligibility applied from 12 January 2018 until midnight on 11 May 2018.
