U.S. Weightlifting Athlete Angela Carlberg Accepts Public Warning

Press Release

1st October 2019

USADA announced today that Angela Carlberg, of Mount Rainier, MD, an athlete in the sport of weightlifting, has accepted a public warning for an anti-doping rule violation.

Calberg, 24, tested positive for vilanterol as the result of an in-competition urine sample collected at the USA Weightlifting National Championship on May 11, 2019. Vilanterol is a Specified Substance in the category of Beta-2 Agonists and is prohibited at all times under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the International Weightlifting Federation Anti-Doping Rules, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

After a thorough review of the case, including Carlberg’s medical records, USADA determined that a reduced sanction was appropriate because Carlberg used a prescription inhaler containing vilanterol trifenatate at the direction of a physician to treat severe asthma and cooperated with USADA throughout the results management process. Carlberg had not obtained a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in advance of using her medication.

Because her positive sample was collected in-competition, Carlberg has had her competitive results obtained on that date disqualified, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
