The appeal of Guillermo Olaso is dismissed - the decision of the Tennis Integrity Unit is confirmed

2 October 2014 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued its decision in the case of the Spanish tennis player Guillermo Olaso de la Rica against the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).

Mr Olaso appealed to the CAS to overturn a decision issued by the Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer of the TIU in which he was sanctioned with a five-year period of ineligibility and a fine of USD 25,000. The CAS Panel dismissed the player’s arguments and confirmed the challenged decision in its entirety, finding that the sanction was proportionate and appropriate in the circumstances.

The case concerns irregularities during a match played on 3 November 2010 at the ATP Challenger Presidents Cup tournament in Astana, Kasakhstan. Irregular betting patterns had been flagged to the TIU in advance of the match, with bets having been placed on the lower ranked player to win. Following the TIU’s investigations, the Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer found that Mr Olaso had committed a corruption offence as well as infringements of the rules relating to the obligation to report any corruption approaches.
