As the Covid-19 pandemic continues changing the world of sport, the way media rights agreements are negotiated, and which provisions are of key importance, changes as well. While traditional media broadcasting methods have shaped the structure of media rights agreements for decades, the development of and widespread access to new technology has changed how many fans and viewers consume sport content.

LawInSport’s Football Law Conference 2021 included a panel discussion on negotiating and drafting media rights agreements from an international perspective. The panel focused on the development of OTT media options, what provisions to pay attention to when negotiating, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and other topics.

This article summarizes the discussion.  The panel speakers were:

  • Ian Smith, Director, Commercial & Operational Legal, FIFA
  • Dan Bowden, Senior Legal Counsel – Broadcast and Rights, DAZN
  • HandeÖztürk, In-House Counsel, BeIN Sports (Turkey)
  • Steve Bainbridge, Head of Sports & Events Management, Al Tamimi & Co
