In 2018 LawInSport launched its global Mentoring Scheme with the aim to provide a practical mentoring scheme for students, lawyers as well as current and former athletes to help develop the next generation of sports lawyers who do not already have an existing network in the sector.
Mentees can be at any stage in their career, but they must be interested in developing a career within the field of sports law in some capacity.
The scheme is designed to offer useful practical advice, some exposure to the type of work involved practising as a sports lawyer, and provide further opportunities for the mentee to engage with LawInSport’s professional network and make useful contacts in the sector.
Mentees must answer the following questions:
Are you legally qualified or presently engaged on a course towards qualifying as a lawyer?
How would you describe yourself, your educational and/ or career journey to date?
Why do you believe you need mentoring in sports law?
Do you have an existing network in sports law?
What areas of law are you interested in and why?
Which country are you based in/from?
Mentors are established sports lawyers be it in-house counsel, solicitor, barrister, advocate or academic.
If you would like to be one of our mentors please complete this form to apply.
HOW TO APPLY - MENTEE
Each applicant is required to complete a short questionnaire and will not be treated more favourably because they are more highly qualified, or have obtained qualifications from an institution considered to be superior from another. So long as the minimum requirement is met, all applicants will be considered.
Depending on the number of applications received it may be necessary for applicants to attend a short (10-15 minute) Zoom interview.
Applications must be received no later than 30 June 2023. To complete your application click here.
Applicants should hear back by the end of July 2023.
The scheme commences in September each year for a period of 1 year.
We will be accepting 35 Mentees onto our scheme for 2023/24.
The LawInSport Academy Mentoring Scheme is organised and run by LawInSport with the help of volunteers.
Engage in a remote work experience, shadowing or project/research work for their Mentor at a mutually convenient time during the year.
Meet with their Mentor on at least two further occasions during the year for coffee, lunch or over phone/Zoom to discuss the mentee’s progress and provide general advice and mentoring.
Participate and engage with other mentees.
Write at least one blog article during their year for publication for LawInSport (whether written with the Mentor or otherwise);
Write a report about how the scheme worked out, and exchange it. LawInSport will have the right to republish any part of that report in a longer piece about the scheme.
