LawInSport Mentoring Title Image

In 2018 LawInSport launched its global Mentoring Scheme with the aim to provide a practical mentoring scheme for students, lawyers as well as current and former athletes to help develop the next generation of sports lawyers who do not already have an existing network in the sector.

Mentees can be at any stage in their career, but they must be interested in developing a career within the field of sports law in some capacity.

The scheme is designed to offer useful practical advice, some exposure to the type of work involved practising as a sports lawyer, and provide further opportunities for the mentee to engage with LawInSport’s professional network and make useful contacts in the sector.

Mentees must answer the following questions:

  1. Are you legally qualified or presently engaged on a course towards qualifying as a lawyer?

  2. Which country are you based/from?

  3. How would you describe yourself and your career to date?

  4. Do you have a real interest in sports law?

  5. What areas of law are you interested in and why?

  6. What do you want to get out of the scheme and why?

  7. What would you like to achieve over the next 12 months? (in terms of the scheme and career and/or personal development)

  8. Why do you believe you should be selected as a mentee?

  9. Confirm if you have an existing network in sports law?

Mentors are established sports lawyers be it in-house counsel, solicitor, barrister, advocate or academic.

Each applicant is required to complete a short questionnaire and will not be treated more favourably because they are more highly qualified, or have obtained qualifications from an institution considered to be superior from another. So long as the minimum requirement is met, all applicants will be considered.

Depending on the number of applications received it may be necessary for applicants to attend a short (10-15 minute) Zoom interview.

Applications must be received no later than 1 June 2022. To complete your application click here.

Applicants should hear back by July 2022, if not before.

The scheme commences in September each year for a period of 1 year.

We will be accepting 35 Mentees onto our scheme for 2022/23.

The LawInSport Academy Mentoring Scheme is organised and run by LawInSport with the help of volunteers.

Mentees will:

  1. Engage in a remote work experience, shadowing or project/research work for their Mentor at a mutually convenient time during the year.

  2. Meet with their Mentor on at least two further occasions during the year for coffee, lunch or over phone/Zoom to discuss the mentee’s progress and provide general advice and mentoring.

  3. Participate and engage with other mentees.

  4. Write at least one blog article during their year for publication for LawInSport (whether written with the Mentor or otherwise);

  5. Write a report about how the scheme worked out, and exchange it. LawInSport will have the right to republish any part of that report in a longer piece about the scheme.

The current scheme has 34 mentees from various countries around the world.
