An application for a change of nationality was accepted today by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) as it held a hybrid meeting from Lausanne, which concluded a series of commission meetings in the course of the week. 

Port Vale to launch mental health partnership for players, staff and supporters

Port Vale have agreed a pioneering partnership with psychological and technology resources company AIM-FOR which will offer free mental health support to players, club staff and supporters.

The EFL’s Community Club of the Year is investing in Mental Health Safety Net – a bespoke suite of digital tools which will enable club employees and supporters to identify issues which may be affecting them and access a raft of information support services.

WADA Strategic Testing Expert Advisory Group explores alternative sample collection programs


From 27-29 September 2021, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA’s) Strategic Testing Expert Advisory Group held three virtual meetings focused on the following topics:

  • An overview of new and existing areas of testing, including the implementation of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) and sample collection best practices for transgender athletes;
  • A review and update of the ‘Guidance for Testing during COVID-19 Pandemic’ document which was issued in November 2020;
  • A review of the implementation of, and compliance with, the Technical Document for Sports Specific Analysis (TDSSA), including the implementation of the haematological module of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP); and
  • The progress of a feasibility study on alternative sample collection programs.

CGF appoint new Ethics Officer and new Commission members


The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is delighted to announce the appointment of its first Ethics Officer and a further four members to its Ethics Commission.

The CGF Ethics Commission is a completely independent body tasked with maintaining the highest standards of probity throughout the Commonwealth Sport Movement. 

FIFA publishes the 2021 edition of the Commentary on the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players


The first edition, published in 2007 by FIFA, was a tool to supplement the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), which were first adopted in 2001 following cooperation and negotiations between FIFA and the European Commission.

The commentary on the RSTP is a crucial document which will support member associations, clubs, players, leagues and football legal experts in ensuring that the RSTP is applied consistently across the global football community.

Sport Integrity Australia: play it fair online

Sport Integrity Australia, together with 23 other major sporting organisations from around Australia, has teamed with the eSafety Commissioner to help combat online abuse in sport.

According to CEO David Sharpe, the agency joined the collective in signing the Online Safety Statement of Commitment as there is no place for abuse – whether it’s on the sporting field, off the field, or online.

NHLPA statement following Executive Board meeting

UIPM Committee Members meet to kickstart new 5th discipline consultation process


Six members of UIPM’s Athletes Committee, Coaches Committee and Technical Committee met today to begin the consultation process announced by the UIPM Executive Board (EB) on November 4.

Current and incoming members of the three committees had preliminary discussions about the consultation process and were briefed by UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann as well as UIPM Vice-President Joel Bouzou and Secretary General Shiny Fang.

Powerlifting Athlete Suspended for the Presence and Use of Tamoxifen


The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced today that Phillipe Marcil, a powerlifting athlete, received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping rule violation. The athlete’s urine sample, collected during in-competition doping control on August 21, 2021, revealed the presence of tamoxifen, a prohibited hormone and metabolic modulator.

Bertomeau 'to step down' as Euroleague CEO after six clubs vote to dismiss him


Euroleague Basketball chief executive Jordi Bertomeu will leave his position at the end of the season after six of the basketball club competition’s 11 shareholder teams voted to dismiss him.

In a teleconference including all eleven of the league’s shareholders, six clubs voted to oust the Catalan executive while five voted to keep him on, according to multiple reports.

IPC General Assembly to be held remotely

The IPC General Assembly set for 11-12 December 2021 in Chinese Taipei will now be held remotely after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) was informed by national authorities in the host country that all attendees would need to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.

Since Chinese Taipei was awarded the General Assembly in June, the Local Organising Committee NPC Chinese Taipei has been developing COVID-19 countermeasures to ensure the health and safety of all attendees.  The NPC felt they were very near agreement with the authorities on a bubble system for the General Assembly. However, upon speaking directly with the national authorities on Tuesday, the IPC were informed that all General Assembly delegates would in fact have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. This is non-practical solution for all concerned and the IPC has now decided to stage the event online.

In this latest edition of ‘Spotlight’, which keeps stakeholders up to date on the activities being carried out by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) team and its partners, we look at the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) program. This program provides a harmonized global approach for athletes that have illnesses or medical conditions that require them to take medications that are included on WADA’s Prohibited List. Louisiana Gaming Control Board awards Genius Sports initial temporary sports betting authorization

State gaming authority grants Genius Sports initial approval to support sportsbook partners statewide.

Genius Sports Limited (NYSE: GENI) (“Genius Sports”), the official data, technology and commercial partner that powers the ecosystem connecting sports, betting and media, announced today that it has been certified by the State of Louisiana Gaming Control Board as Sports Wagering Service Provider for an initial six months. Genius Sports is currently awaiting its full license authorization.

IIHF Council meeting concludes

It was the first Council meeting to be held under newly-elected IIHF President Luc Tardif, who took over the IIHF Presidency from René Fasel following the Council elections held in St. Petersburg on 25 September.

World Rugby has announced the establishment of a dedicated women’s player welfare steering group that will exclusively focus on the advancement of player welfare initiatives and interventions designed specifically for the women’s game at all levels.

Women’s rugby is growing globally at a rapid pace and, in line with its strategy to cement rugby as the most progressive sport on player welfare, World Rugby is committed to ensuring a dedicated focus on women’s welfare advancement, and not just replicate or adopt measures in place for the men’s game. This approach also supports the approach outlined in the transformational 2017-25 Women’s Plan.

The ITA is granted observer status of the Monitoring Group for the Council of Europe’s Anti-Doping Convention

The ITA had filed an application to be granted observer status earlier this year, and it was unanimously confirmed by the parties to the Anti-Doping Convention in July 2021. The Monitoring Group of the Convention surveys its application, examines any necessary modifications, holds consultations with any necessary stakeholders, recommends the appropriate measures to keep relevant organisations and the public informed about the activities undertaken within its framework and makes any proposal to improve its effectiveness. The Group also approves the list of pharmacological classes of doping agents and doping methods and the criteria for the accreditation of laboratories.
