NBA and NBPA reach Tentative Deal on New Collective Bargaining Agreement
Play for change – Compound and the NBPA join forces for a more than basketball collaboration for social justice
NBA players have consistently been leaders of change in their communities, using their voices and their resources to bring attention to the ongoing episodes of social injustice, police brutality, and systemic racism across the country. On August 26, the players used their platform to stage a powerful protest, opting out of their games after Jacob Blake was shot 7 times by Kenosha Police in Wisconsin. This “pause” by the players caused another shift by forcing conversation and action to take place and many other sports organizations followed suit.

Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Los Angeles Lakers star J.R. Smith, NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts, New Jersey Devils President Jake Reynolds, New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way, and Essex County Board of Elections Clerk Linda Von Nessi announced in a virtual press conference today that the Prudential Center will serve as a “Super Polling Site” for the upcoming 2020 Presidential election pending final vote by the Essex County Board of Elections. It would accept ballots on Election Day, provide residents with opportunities to register to vote in September, and serve as a location to assist Newark residents with filling out and returning 2020 US Census forms by the September 30 deadline.

We had a candid, impassioned and productive conversation yesterday between NBA players, coaches and team governors regarding next steps to further our collective efforts and actions in support of social justice and racial equality. Among others, the attendees included player and team representatives of all 13 teams in Orlando. All parties agreed to resume NBA playoff games on Saturday, Aug. 29 with the understanding that the league together with the players will work to enact the following commitments:
NBA Board of Governors launch first-ever NBA Foundation in partnership with NBPA to support black communities and drive generational change
The NBA Board of Governors announced today that it will contribute $300 million in initial funding to establish the first-ever NBA Foundation dedicated to creating greater economic empowerment in the Black community. The Foundation is being launched in partnership with the National Basketball Players Association.

The Commit to C.A.R.E Now Initiative will showcase, honor and celebrate the humanity of Black men while addressing a number of issues such as public safety, safe and fair voting, community engagement and the accurate portrayal of Black men in media.
NBA athletes Robert Covington and Luol Deng partner with Own Our Own to initiate community development project in the south side of Chicago
Own Our Own, an inner-city focused real estate fund, today announces its first Chicago-based project in partnership with Houston Rockets forward Robert Covington and former Chicago Bull and 2-time All-Star Luol Deng. Former players Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Matt Barnes are also investor-partners. The impact investment project aims to transform a South Side of Chicago neighborhood through an affordable housing and community development initiative that will improve quality of life through increased public safety and access to critical social services.

Throughout the season restart, our players have been unwavering in their demands for systemic justice. This week we witnessed another horrific, shocking and all too familiar act of brutality in the shooting of 29 year-old Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Players have, once again, made it clear - they will not be silent on this issue. We stand with the decision of the players of the Milwaukee Bucks to protest this injustice and support the collective decision to postpone all of today's games.
