Equestrian rider Olga Safronova has become the second Belarusian athlete to receive a humanitarian visa from Poland after she publicly criticised the Belarusian Government.
American shot putter Raven Saunders became the first athlete to demonstrate on the podium at the Tokyo Olympics when she formed an X with her arms above her head after collecting her silver medal.
Saunders told the Associated Press that the gesture represents “the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet.” IOC Rule 50 governs athlete protests and demonstrations and whilst rules have been partially relaxed it has been stressed that any demonstrations on the podium are off limits.
The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has confirmed that all athlete protests are banned from the podium and pool deck during the Tokyo Olympics.
FIFPRO has underlined its commitment to player activism after the International Olympic Committee released guidelines, clarifying that athletes are subject to sanctions by making political gestures on the podium, in the Olympic village, at the opening and closing ceremonies, or on the field of play.
