Richard has a long history in sports law cases ranging through commercial law, intellectual property, defamation and public law. He has been instructed in cases involving image rights, numerous privacy and confidential information injunctions, judicial reviews, and contractual disputes between sportspersons and their agents/promoters. Significant reported cases at appeal level include Warren v Mendy on restraint of trade, and R v Jockey Club ex p Aga Khan on judicial review of sports bodies, both in the Court of Appeal; Grobbelaar v News Group, a libel case concerning match fixing, in the House of Lords; and Ivey v Genting, a case on cheating and dishonesty, in the Supreme Court. Football, boxing and horse racing feature frequently in his case load, albeit not exclusively.
