Carl Troman

Barrister, 4 New Square

Carl is a barrister at 4 New Square, having been called to the Bar in 2001.   He practices in the core areas of chambers’ work particularly professional liability, commercial litigation and insurance.

Carl has a niche practice specialising in automotive litigation which encompasses legal issues relating to motorsport and supercars, both classic and contemporary.

Carl acts for the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association in relation to matters before the Motor Sports Council National Court including enquiries and disciplinary hearings. In that regard Carl recently appeared for the MSA at a disciplinary hearing and successfully persuaded the National Court for the first time that in relation to failures by motor clubs to comply with MSA regulations the Court could impose sanctions upon individuals and not just upon the clubs themselves.

Carl has acted for Mark Webber the Red Bull Formula 1 racing driver. He has also been instructed by the British Automobile Racing Club Ltd and the Speedway Control Bureau in relation to claims arising from racing incidents. He was retained in a multi-party dispute over the ownership of a Pagani Zonda F C12 Coupe Clubsport and has been consulted in other tortious and contractual claims with an international flavour regarding classic cars including high value cases concerning a pre-war chassis and a replica of a pre-war classic car. Carl has recently acted in disputes relating to an Aston Martin DB5, and E-type Jaguar and an ex works group A Lancia Delta Integrale rally car.

Carl is recommended as a leading junior in the field of professional negligence in the 2012 Legal 500 and described as “exceptional”, having been described as a “budding star” in 2011.

Carl is a formally accredited mediator and has considerable experience advising and acting in relation to mediations.

Carl also acts as an arbitrator.
