Covid-19, another reason to give athletes a seat at the table in anti-doping

A few days ago, the German Sport University in Cologne presented the results of a survey that demonstrated the financial impact that Covid-19 has had on elite German athletes. The research team showed that on average, German Olympic and Paralympic athletes have lost 25% of their regular income since the begin of the pandemic. One can only assume that athletes worldwide are facing similar impacts and the situation is expected to worsen next year.

The Swiss Federal Supreme Court dismisses the appeals submitted by the South African athlete Caster Semenya and her athletics federation against the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport on the "Eligibility Regulations for the Female Classification (Athletes with Differences of Sex Development)" (DSD Regulations). The Court of Arbitration for Sport had the right to uphold the conditions of participation issued for female athletes with the genetic variant "46 XY DSD" in order to guarantee fair competition for certain running disciplines in female athletics.

IWF Reform and Governance Commission established

The first meeting of the IWF Reform and Governance Commission was held over the weekend of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, with Darren Charles Kane of Australia selected to start as Chair. The Commission will now be responsible for developing a new constitution and bylaws with a deadline of 22 January 2021. The new governing documents are to be circulated to IWF Member Federations two months prior to the IWF Electoral Reform Congress scheduled for 24 March 2021.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) today confirmed an extension of its partnership with the International Testing Agency (ITA) until the end of 2024 and provided an initial response to the report published by the Intelligence and Investigations (I&I) department of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) extends its agreement with the International Testing Agency (ITA) by four years until 2024 for the independent management of its complete anti-doping program. The ITA also welcomes the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Intelligence & Investigations report on weightlifting, which will help in the pursuit of violations of the IWF anti-doping rules.

Statement by the IOC regarding the situation of the IWF

The IOC is very worried to learn about the reported decision made by the Board of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to replace the Acting President, Ms Ursula Garza Papandrea, the way the decision was taken and the chosen replacement. The IOC enjoyed excellent cooperation with her during her time in office, and is fully supportive of the reforms she has initiated in the IWF. Currently the IOC has not received all the information to fully assess the situation in its entirety.

EU Athletes share serious concerns expressed by the international community regarding the situation in Belarus. We stand in solidarity with nearly 700 athletes and other persons from Belarusian sport who have called for, among others, new elections, end to police violence and assistance to all victims of illegal actions of the regime in their open letter[1]. The Free Union of Athletes has become a source of inspiration for the protests, despite the risks for their profesional and personal situations and safety.
