The 43-year-old former professional player, who is a UEFA vice-president, was the only candidate in the election at the RFEF’s assembly, which took place at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas, Madrid.

The RFEF president, in office since May 2018, said that his mandate until 2024 would focus on dialogue, adherence to proper values and efficient management. "I will seek the good of all,” he said. “I will do so with rigour, with new projects, with programmes."

Healthy grassroots sector

Rubiales also stressed his belief in the pyramid of football, based on a healthy grassroots sector. "It is our obligation to defend the base of this pyramid,” he reflected. “Without strong football at this base, the failure of the elite level is assured."

He underlined his support for women's football and futsal, emphasising his commitment to boosting both sectors’ professional competitions.

Rubiales also highlighted the level of Spanish refereeing, saying that the country’s match officials are "a reference in world football and a source of pride for this federation."
