The ITA reports that MMA athlete Jose Alexis Sanchez Diaz has been sanctioned with a 2-year period of ineligibility
The International Testing Agency (ITA), on behalf of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), reports that Mexican Mixed Martial Arts athlete Jose Alexis Sanchez Diaz has been sanctioned with a two-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation.
The ITA reports that athlete Jose Alexis Sanchez Diaz was sanctioned with a two-year period of ineligibility after testing positive for furosemide following an in-competition doping control on 7 September 2024 during the 2024 IMMAF Pan American Championships taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.
Furosemide is prohibited under the WADA Prohibited List as S5. Diuretics and Masking Agents. It is prohibited at all times (in- and out-of-competition) and is classified as a specified substance. Furosemide can be used by athletes to excrete water for rapid weight loss.
The sanction was issued by the ITA on behalf of IMMAF in accordance with article 8.3.3 of the IMMAF anti-doping rules (and equivalent provision in the World Anti-Doping Code).¹ The period of ineligibility is effective from 2 November 2024 (date on which the athlete was provisionally suspended) until 1 November 2026 and the athlete’s results have been disqualified from 7 September 2024 (date of sample collection) until 2 November 2024 (date of provisional suspension).
Parties with a right of appeal may challenge the decision before the appeals division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in accordance with article 13.2 of the IMMAF anti-doping rules.
The ITA will not comment further on this case.
