The ITA reports that wrestler Erdenesuvd Bat Erdene has been sanctioned with a two-year period of ineligibility
The International Testing Agency (ITA), leading an independent anti-doping program for United World Wrestling (UWW), reports that Mongolian wrestler Erdenesuvd Bat Erdene has been sanctioned with a two-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV).
The ITA reports that Mongolian wrestler Erdenesuvd Bat Erdene has been sanctioned with a two-year period of ineligibility after testing positive for furosemide following an out-of-competition doping control on 21 September 2023.
Furosemide is prohibited under the WADA Prohibited List as S5. Diuretics and Masking Agents. It is prohibited at all times (in- and out-of-competition) and is classified as a specified substance. Furosemide can be used by athletes to excrete water for rapid weight loss.
The athlete’s sample of 21 September 2023 initially returned an Atypical Finding (ATF)¹ for furosemide. As required by the WADA stakeholder notice regarding potential diuretic contamination cases (WADA Stakeholder Notice)², the ITA initiated an investigation to determine whether or not the ATF was caused by inadvertent contamination from a pharmaceutical product taken by the athlete prior to sample collection. However, the athlete was unable to establish that the ATF was a result of pharmaceutical contamination, and therefore the ATF was pursued as an Adverse Analytical Finding³, and subsequently as an ADRV under Articles 2.1 (presence of a prohibited substance) and 2.2 (use of a prohibited substance or a prohibited method) of the UWW Anti-Doping Rules (UWW ADR).
The sanction was issued by the ITA on behalf of UWW in accordance with article 8.3.3 of the UWW ADR (and equivalent provision in the World Anti-Doping Code).⁴ The period of ineligibility is effective from 4 August 2026 until 3 August 2028 and the athlete’s results have been disqualified from 21 September 2023 onwards.
Parties with a right of appeal may challenge the decision before the appeals division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in accordance with article 13.2 of the UWW ADR.
The ITA will not comment further on this case.
