Alejandro Valverde has failed to clear his name after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld a two-year suspension for a doping offence. The National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI) had banned the Spanish rider in May 2009 after his DNA sample matched blood found at a Madrid clinic.

Showjumper Michael Whitaker's ban from competing for the British team at future Olympic Games has been lifted. Whitaker, a 50-year-old four-time Olympian, received the ban after his horse Tackeray failed a drugs test at an event in France in May 2009.

The Pakistan Olympic Association has postponed the country's annual national games for security reasons. The games were to be held in the city of Peshawar this month, but have been provisionally rescheduled for December.
