Portsmouth face freefall fears as club enters uncertain transfer window

Concern is growing on the south coast that Avram Grant will be unable to strengthen a threadbare Portsmouth squad as he seeks to save the club, four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, from relegation.

Portsmouth do not expect to be able to deal in the transfer window until 10 January at the earliest, when they are due to be paid a £7m instalment of TV money from the Premier League – and they are aware that the ban on signing players could be enforced throughout the month.

NSPCC welcomes rugby star's revelations

The former England rugby player Brian Moore's decision to speak out about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child was welcomed by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) yesterday. In a statement, the charity said: "It is good that high-profile people are willing to speak out about abuse. We hope it encourages others who have suffered, or are suffering, abuse to come forward."

Cash-strapped British ABA pull out of boxing's world series

The British Amateur Boxing Association will not be taking up the offer of a London franchise in the revolutionary new World Series tournament due to be launched later this year. I understand that a decision has been taken to pull out largely for financial reasons following the disappointing pre-Olympics shortfall in funding from UK Sport. The tournament, backed by AIBA, the sport's international governing body, had required a non-refundable £66,000 deposit by Christmas and BABA feel they cannot afford this in the current economic climate and that entering the series would be too great a financial risk.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez rules out sale of Babel

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has ruled out selling Dutch forward Ryan Babel in the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old Babel joined from Ajax in 2007 for an £11.5m fee, but has failed to start regularly and has been linked with a move away from Anfield.

Wenger unsure over injury claim

Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal are still in the dark over whether they will receive compensation for the injury to Robin van Persie.

The Dutch striker suffered ankle ligament damage in Holland's friendly with Italy in November which could mean Wenger is without his star striker for the rest of the season.
